ARTIST: Wu Weishan _______
TITLE: ____sleeping boy______
DATE: ____1998___________
i. DESCRIBE the artwork.
The title of my favorite artwork is “Sleeping Boy”. The artist is the famous sculptor in China and all over the world Wu Weishan. The artwork is made in the summer of 1998 when Mr. Wu went to visit his friend Su Taixi. The sculpture uses smooth textures on the head of the sculpture and rough textures on the neck and half-body part. The colour of the sculpture is mainly bronze and a little red on the ear and neck part. The subject of the artwork is a sleeping boy. His head lies a little bit right his mouth is opening like the shape of the O. I see a very lovely and peaceful little boy.
ii. INTERPRET the artwork.
The artwork gives me a feeling of freedom and release. The calm appearance of the child’s face makes me feel so relaxed. I believe that in the boy’s dream, he wills not dream of money or other complicated things in our human’s life. The whole body is full of a sense of nature, a spirit from the paradise. The artwork reminds me of my childhood, the naïve words that came out of my mouth: mom, why do you love daddy? Why do you like me? Mom why do you close your eyes when you sleep? The questions seem stupid but it was the most lovely and precious moment that is full of purity. The artwork makes me thinks about the book<<>>.The poor child lost his father, mother and his grandparents’ family was full of fights and quarells. But he still believed in himself and had a pure and positive heart! The artwork relates to all the pure and precious moments in our life. Close your eyes, don’t worry about the outside world, as long as your heart is pure you will live a graceful life. The artist’s intention was that he wanted to record the lovely and pure face of child and he wanted this artwork to go into the museum and let more people to share his joy.

iii. JUDGE the artwork.
I like this artwork very much. The main reason is that it gives me a calm and peaceful feeling in my heart. It slept soundly and opened his little mouth and closed his eyes. His chubby cheeks and little hair al makes me think that he’s the angle to my heart. I can see in every cell of him the joy and purity. Especially, the artwork was made in such a short time. It is true that some inspiration came suddenly and can be made only a few minutes and Mr. Wu really did it. That was an amazing part! It is not just following the western style but also added some Chinese traditional spirit of culture, this is what I appreciate. The other people also appreciated the artwork. Many famous people wrote sentences for him. The Queen of Holland, the scientist Yang Zhenning and many other people highly respected him. In 2003 <<>> was selected to win the Pangolin Prize. He is a member of British Royal Society of Sculptors and member of National City Sculpture Construction Committee and so on.
